Père Lachaise cemetery, spread across a hillside that covers over a hundred acres, is the green lung of the 20th arrondissement. The cemetery was opened by Napoleon, and it gave its name to the area and led to its development. Visitors from all over the world come to pay their respects at the graves of celebrities like Victor Hugo, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf and Jim Morrison. Today still, the surrounding streets have kept a country village feel, with pedestrian laneways and little houses with flowering gardens. If you take a walk around the cemetery’s boundaries, you will discover a variety of cultural neighbourhoods, from working class French, to North-African along the Boulevard de Menilmontant, followed by Asian in the Chinese area of Belleville, where you must stop for a drink at the Belleviloise, the mythical concert bar and cultural venue. The Gambetta neighbourhood is the chic area, whereas the trendy side is adjacent to the 11th.
