The once run-down 19th has become increasingly smart in recent years and is popular with families looking to climb the first rung on the Parisian property ladder and with students and young professionals looking for lower rents. The large, informal Parc des Buttes-Chaumont also increases the arrondissement’s appeal. The area around the Canal d’Ourcq is going up the world too. There are lovely waterside walks and modern apartment buildings with parking. The main tourist attraction in the 19th, in the district known as La Villette, is the highly-rated Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, an ultra modern science museum, which includes special attractions for the under-12s. In the museum’s wake, the area around it has also become much more gentrified in recent years. (Photos: Evan Bench)
