The picture-perfect Île de la Cité has been inhabited since the first century BC. It’s still at the heart of what remains of medieval Paris and is home to the city’s second most iconic monument, the cathedral of Notre Dame. It’s one of the capital's most popular tourist spots – it’s said that as many as 50,000 tourists a day come here during peak season – and most of what’s here in the way of restaurants and shops caters to the visitors rather than the area’s not very numerous residents. There are apartments to be found here, however, and they’re ideal for romantic souls who value Gothic atmosphere above day-to-day convenience.
