Once a working-class neighbourhood, the Canal Saint Martin has become the Brooklyn of Paris. Full of romance, with its dainty bridges and locks that set the pace for the barges and pleasure boats that travel up and down, the canal attracts a motley crew of open-minded people. Students, young professionals and hipsters wander along its banks. The world is reinvented in its cafes, concert halls, alternative art venues and artsy boutiques. The functional, and even industrial façades of its architecture are a source of inspiration to street artists. In the summer, picnics and bottles of wine are shared at the water’s edge. On Sundays, families walk with buggies and bikes towards the Square Villemin, the biggest park in the neighbourhood with a playground for children and a community garden.
