Ménilmontant was once a solidly working class district known for its incendiary politics and its lively music halls. It still retains its working class roots and has been home to successive waves of immigrants, but it’s become increasingly popular with artists, students and young professionals looking for better-priced accommodation than can be found closer in to the centre of Paris. The Métro connections aren’t the best, but Ménilmontant has some excellent food shops, North African and Asian ones in particular; some nice neighbourhood cafés; a proliferation of trendy bars and restaurants; and a vibrant, alternative arts scene.
