This lively section of Paris bordering the Marais starts at the revamped place de la République and finishes at the place de la Bastille. The neighbourhood has traditionally been staunchly working class and even today it seems to have resisted some of the gentrification that has swept through large parts of the rest of Paris and you can still find relatively well-priced apartments here. There are appealing cafés, restaurants and clubs throughout the area and the covered Marché des Enfants Rouges on the rue de Bretagne is a particular draw. The surrounding streets also contain excellent food shops and restaurants as well as art galleries and designer boutiques.
