The newly revamped Place de la République is at the intersection of three arrondissements: the 3rd, the 10th and the 11th. Head north and you reach the Gare du Nord. Occupying the square kilometre between the station and the Grands Boulevards is the trendy neighbourhood of Faubourg St.-Denis, which offers a lively, multicultural atmosphere, interesting food shops and a choice of often quite spacious, renovated and well-priced apartments. East of Faubourg St.-Denis and the 10th’s other train station, the Gare de l’Est, is the increasingly gentrified area around the lovely Canal St.-Martin. Residents appreciate its peaceful atmosphere, while tourists come here for the promise of a leisurely boat trip and trendy cafés and bars and bohemian boutiques along the canal’s banks.
