The 14th takes in most of the district known as Montparnasse and views of the area are dominated by the unlovely Tour Montparnasse (itself located in the 15th), one of central Paris’s only skyscrapers. Once a haven for artists in flight from the escalating rents in Montmartre, the area is now a centre for business. It still offers a good choice of affordable housing and has wide boulevards lined with nice brasseries and restaurants, and several areas of green, including the Parc Montsouris and the grounds of the historic Observatoire de Paris. The Cité Universitaire de Paris brings large numbers of students into the area, while tourists come to visit the creepy Catacombes and the Montparnasse Cemetery. The pedestrianised rue Daguerre, in the neighbourhood known as Denfert-Rochereau, has one of the city’s best permanent food markets.
