The 17th contains several contrasting neighbourhoods. The Batignolles district, which borders Montmatre, is a now largely gentrified, residential district, which retains a bohemian, village feel. It is popular with families for its park, cafés and bistros, and organic market. To the west and heading down toward the Arc de Triomphe are the high-end neighbourhoods of Monceau and Ternes with their grand Hausmannian apartment buildings, some of which have balconies and marble lobbies, and nearly all of them elevators. Renting here is a little less expensive than in the centre of the city and apartments are often more spacious. The pretty Parc Monceau is an attraction (even if it’s actually in the 8th), while the area around the Place de Clichy remains a popular shopping destination.
