Named for the Paris stock market (“la Bourse”), which is still to be found in the same location it has occupied since the early nineteenth century, the 2nd is the city’s central business district and the smallest of all the arrondissements. There are some lovely apartments to be had here and you will have the advantage of being at the heart of things, but some of the accommodation will be on the small side. Alongside its commercial activities, the 2nd is also home to most of Paris’s surviving covered shopping arcades (forerunners of the modern mall). You’ll also find one of the city’s best and more picturesque permanent fresh food markets on the rue Montorgueil.
