One of the wealthier areas of Paris, the 6th takes in the elegant Luxembourg Gardens, the renowned Odéon theatre and the charming neighbourhood of St.-Germain-des-Près. This is one of Paris’s most sought-after neighbourhoods and there are some lovely apartments available here, but don’t always expect a lift. The cafés of St.-Germain-des-Près – notably the Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots – once played host to the likes of Camus, Sartre, Picasso, Giacometti and Hemmingway. Nowadays St.-Germain is home to chic boutiques, interior design showrooms, expensive art galleries and fine dining. It’s been called “more glitterati than literati,” but several of Paris’s most prestigious publishing houses are still based here.
