The southern edge of the 9th, with its wide Haussmannian boulevards, is home to the headquarters of large banks and corporations, as well as the flagship branches of the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps department stores. There are grand and spacious apartments to be found here too. The Paris Opéra is located at the gaudy Palais Garnier and the nearby Paris Olympia is a major venue for French and international music stars. The heart of the 9th, meanwhile, is the lovely district of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, which has plenty of 19th century charm and some appealing apartments. The rue des Martyrs, in the gentrifying, bobo SoPi (for South of Pigalle), has a great selection of specialist food shops, making it a draw for gourmets. Less appealingly, the area around Place Pigalle combines cheap shops and the city’s red-light district.
