The north-west quadrant of the 6th arrondissement, the area known as St.-Germain-des-Prés, is one the wealthier parts of Paris and certainly one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in which to live. The cafés here – notably the Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots – once played host to such artists and intellectuals as Camus and Sartre, Picasso, Giacometti and Hemmingway. The area was also at the centre of a jazz revival in the Fifties and was for a long time the hub of the French publishing industry. Nowadays St.-Germain doesn’t seem quite so high-minded: its pretty streets are lined with chic boutiques, interior design showrooms, expensive art galleries and some very good bistros and restaurants. With or without the intellectuals though, it’s undoubtedly a lovely place to live.
